Breath is the most immediate of all the tools, and for most people the natural place to begin. It is the one tool you carry with you everywhere — needing no equipment, no place, and no preparation, available at any moment to regulate your own state of being. Its power comes from a peculiarity: of all the body’s functions, the breath is one of the few that is both automatic and voluntary at once. It runs on its own, yet you can take hold of it at will — a direct handle on the flow of the life force, and on the state of the nervous system.
