Intellectual Body + Mental Body
7 practices
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
The mind, when untrained, is the great scatterer — running compulsively between past and future, spinning narratives, reinforcing the story of the separate self, and dispersing the life force in every direction at once. Trained, it becomes the opposite: a precise instrument that concentrates energy, steadies the inner system, and supports the whole work of transformation.
The practices of this lever work on the thinking layer directly — on the content, direction, and quality of thought itself. This matters because the layers of being are not isolated: what happens in the mental body cascades directly into the emotional body, which cascades into the energy body. Chronic rumination and mental noise contract the energy system. Focused, directed thought opens it.
The mind trained well is not merely a cognitive tool — it becomes a lever for inner transformation. The seven practices that follow address the main ways the mind scatters and holds the system back: what it consumes, the clarity of its direction, the precision of its attention, its habit of circling the same ground, and its relationship to time and karma.
Each one removes a source of mental friction and turns the life force back toward the centre.
the mental diet
The content of the mind is not the truth — it is accumulated data. Every piece of information you take in shapes the fabric of your thinking, your emotional state, and through that, your energy. Controlling what you feed the mind is one of the most direct levers available: not dramatic, not esoteric, but quietly decisive.
aligning the personal self
When you do not know where you are going, the mind falls into confusion and scatters attention in every direction. Clarity of purpose ends it — discovering your passion, getting deeply comfortable in your own skin, and aligning your daily actions with what brings you profound joy and makes you feel truly alive.
the directed mind
Using the mind as a creative force — stepping into the role of the conscious creator by combining deep, focused visualization with sustained determination and strategic action. This is not wishful thinking; it is the deliberate alignment of inner vision with outer effort.
the mastery of attention
Training the mind to sustain unwavering attention on a single point. Transforming scattered, leaking energy into a concentrated, powerful force by treating focus as a trainable muscle rather than a fixed talent.
externalising the mind
Transferring internal mental chaos into external physical form. The practice of disentangling your thoughts, quieting the overactive mind, and creating a physical mirror for profound self-understanding.
the architecture of belief
Transforming your mind by deliberately tuning it to a chosen state, pattern, and disposition. The practice of consciously rewiring your underlying beliefs and self-image so that new outcomes and possibilities become effortlessly natural to your system.
the chessboard of time
Gaining profound wisdom and mental maturity by observing the network of your past actions, radically accepting your present position, and strategically directing your future. It is also the deep work of recognising that the “person” you take yourself to be is not a fixed entity — it is a constantly changing phenomenon, held entirely within the eternal Now.
