Environment + Mental Body
7 practices
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
No matter how precisely you have refined your inner practice, you are not a sealed container. You are in a constant, unbroken state of energetic exchange with your immediate surroundings. Think of the energy body as a fish, and the physical environment as the water in the aquarium.
You can feed the fish the highest-quality food and teach it to swim with perfect technique — but if the water itself is toxic, the fish will spend almost all of its vital energy simply surviving the baseline environment, with nothing left for growth. When you live in a chaotic, dirty, or energetically misaligned space, the nervous system registers a constant low-grade friction. The channels constrict defensively.
But when you deliberately curate an environment of order, beauty, and high resonance, the space begins to do the heavy lifting for you — passively sustaining your openness without requiring continuous inner effort. This is why environment is not secondary to inner practice. It either amplifies everything you are building, or silently dismantles it.
The seven practices that follow move from the most intimate layer of your environment — what you wear on your skin — all the way out to the collective culture of the place you live, and to the rare, ancient technology of consecrated spaces that have been specifically engineered to uplift the human system.
the intimate environment
Auditing the most immediate layer of your physical environment — what wraps your skin all day. The practice of choosing natural, unrestrictive materials that allow the body to breathe and the energy system to function without friction.
the home as a mirror
Transforming your living space into an externalised reflection of a clear, settled mind. The practice of decluttering and physical purification to eliminate visual and energetic friction.
the energetic audit of objects
Recognising that the objects around you are not energetically neutral — and that each one carries a specific signature you can begin to perceive if you pay close enough attention. The practice of curating your physical space so that everything in it broadcasts life and expansion rather than stagnation, guilt, or heaviness.
the invisible medium
Controlling the microscopic and acoustic inputs of your environment. The practice of ensuring the air, light, and soundscape of your home actively support biological and energetic thriving rather than silently draining it.
the macro-environment
Evaluating the collective mindset and energy of your geographical location — and recognising when the environment itself is fundamentally misaligned with your nature, requiring a complete geographic change.
the multi-agent environment
Maintaining your energetic sovereignty when living or working with others whose habits, stress, and unconscious patterns are continuously imposing on the shared space.
ancient charging stations
Immersing the physical and energy body in deliberately engineered environments of concentrated life force. The practice of utilising ancient technologies of consecration to effortlessly elevate the inner system without relying entirely on personal mental effort.
