Giving and Receiving

Heart·Emotional Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

A practice of breathing in suffering and breathing out relief — the deliberate opening of the heart to what it would normally close against. It develops compassion, empathy, and selflessness by training the heart to be receptive to the pain of others and saturated enough with goodness to give freely in return. At its core it softens and dissolves the hardened heart, allowing it to enter a state of natural flow — giving and receiving, freely and without reservation.

Mechanism

The separate self’s primary strategy is contraction: pull toward pleasure, push away pain, protect the inner core at all costs. We are not naturally inclined to open to the suffering of others — the instinct is to look away, to protect, to keep a safe distance. This practice directly inverts that.

By voluntarily breathing in what you would normally flee from — the pain of another, or your own — you prove to the nervous system that you are not destroyed by it. The heart, held as an indestructible source of light, does not absorb the darkness; it transforms it. What enters as heaviness exits as relief.

As this practice deepens, compassion and empathy develop naturally. The channels that fear had sealed begin to open. The heart enters a natural flow state — no longer braced against life but moving with it, no longer extracting from the world but overflowing into it.

This is why the practice is so powerful: through the breath it calms the nervous system; through the outpouring of love it heals the emotional body and opens the energy body; and by consciously receiving the pain of others, it dissolves the boundary of the separate self. It works at every level of being simultaneously.

Protocol

  1. 01

Visualise the suffering: Bring to mind a specific suffering — your own, someone you know, or the pain of the world. See it clearly as hot, heavy, dark smoke.

  2. 02

Inhale: Breathe it directly into the heart. Do not flinch.

  3. 03

The transformation: Visualise your heart as an indestructible Diamond or a Blue Flame. The instant the smoke touches it, it is completely vaporised — transformed, not absorbed.

  4. 04

Exhale: Breathe out cool, clear, white light — relief, ease, healing — sending it outward to whoever is suffering.

  5. 05

Repeat: Continue this cycle, breathing in the heaviness and breathing out the light, for as long as feels right.

  6. 06

A note: Only practise this when you can hold the Diamond or Flame clearly and steadily. You are a transformer — not a vessel that simply fills with what it takes in. If the image feels unstable, return to Heart Coherence first until the inner ground is firm.
