A systematic practice of extending compassion and goodwill outward in concentric circles — from yourself, to those you love, to strangers, to those who have caused you pain, and finally to all living beings.
The separate self survives by dividing the world into allies and threats. Loving- Kindness directly dissolves this division — not by suppressing the discrimination but by deliberately extending the same warmth outward, one circle at a time, until the boundary between self and other becomes permeable. Each stage is a genuine inner act, not a performance.
As the warmth extends, the contraction of the separate self softens, the emotional body opens, and the channels clear. The hardest stages — the neutral person, the difficult person — are the most transformative, because they reveal precisely where the heart has been closed.
Move through each stage slowly. For each person or group, silently repeat the phrases below and genuinely reach for the feeling behind the words — not just the thought of it, but the actual warmth in the chest. “May you be happy. May you be safe. May you be free from suffering.”
Stage 1 — yourself: Direct the phrases inward. This is often the most difficult stage. Many people find it far easier to extend goodwill to others than to themselves. Stay here until you feel genuine warmth, not just words.
Stage 2 — a loved one: Bring to mind someone you love easily. Visualise them clearly and send the phrases to them. Let the warmth flow naturally.
Stage 3 — a neutral person: Someone you neither like nor dislike — a neighbour, a shopkeeper, someone you pass regularly. Notice how the heart responds when there is no charge in either direction.
Stage 4 — a difficult person: Someone who has caused you pain or frustration. This is the alchemical stage. Send the phrases without condition. You are not condoning what they did — you are freeing your own heart from the weight of the contraction.
Stage 5 — all beings: Expand the feeling outward without limit — to all people, all creatures, the entirety of life. Radiate the warmth in every direction until there is no boundary left.
