Emotional Presence

feeling through

Heart·Emotional Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

The practice of digesting difficult emotions completely rather than suppressing or being overwhelmed by them. Meeting what is present in the emotional body with full, non- judgmental attention until it moves and releases.

Mechanism

Emotions are energy in motion. They only persist and accumulate when they are resisted — pushed down, intellectualised, or escaped through distraction. When an emotion is met with full, non-judgmental attention, something remarkable happens: it moves. The energy that was locked in the holding releases, the contraction softens, and the channel clears.

This typically takes no more than ninety seconds of genuine, undistracted presence with the raw sensation. What prolongs emotional suffering is not the emotion itself but the story around it — the mental narrative of why it happened, who is to blame, and what it means. Drop the story, and what remains is simply a physical sensation.

Sensations, when felt directly, pass.

Protocol

  1. 01

Check in: Sit quietly and ask yourself honestly: how am I feeling right now, in this moment? Don’t reach for an answer in the mind — turn your attention inward and simply notice what is actually present.

  2. 02

Locate: Find the emotion in the body — not the thought about it, but the physical sensation. Where is it? The chest, the throat, the stomach? What texture does it have — tight, heavy, hot, hollow?

  3. 03

Drop the story: Set aside, just for now, all the thoughts about why you feel this way. The story can wait. What you are interested in is the raw sensation itself.

  4. 04

Feel into it: Feel into your feelings. Be totally present to how you feel in this moment — without moving away, resisting, or identifying with the feeling. Give it your total, non- judgmental attention and simply be present to it.

  5. 05

Give it space: Allow the emotion to exist completely as it is. You are not agreeing with it or being consumed by it — you are simply present with it, without resistance. Notice how it shifts, changes shape, or begins to soften under sustained, non-judgmental attention.

  6. 06

Rest in what remains: As the emotion releases, rest in the open, quiet space that follows. This is the cleared channel — feel it.
