Heart Coherence

Heart·Emotional Body·3–5 minutes

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

The baseline practice of the Heart lever — creating a state of biological safety and inner calm by directing the breath and attention to the heart centre and actively generating a feeling of genuine appreciation.

Mechanism

The heart and brain are in constant communication. When you focus your attention on the centre of the chest and slow the breath to an even rhythm, the nervous system receives a clear signal: we are safe. The body drops out of survival mode — the

chronic low-grade bracing that most people carry all day without realising it. As that bracing dissolves, the emotional body opens, the energy moves more freely, and a natural sense of ease and warmth fills the inner space. Generating genuine appreciation — even for something small — accelerates this shift, because appreciation is incompatible with fear.

You cannot feel truly grateful and contracted at the same time.

Protocol

  1. 01

Focus: Drop your attention from the head to the centre of the chest. Let it rest there — not thinking about the heart, but actually feeling into that space.

  2. 02

Breathe: Breathe slowly and evenly, as if the breath is flowing in through the heart and out through the heart. Five counts in, five counts out.

  3. 03

Feel: Actively generate a feeling of genuine appreciation — for a person, an animal, a place, or a moment in your life. Do not just think about it; reach for the actual feeling. Let it warm the chest.

  4. 04

Sustain: Hold this combination — attention in the chest, slow even breath, genuine appreciation — for 3–5 minutes.
