The Prostration (Sujud / Balasana

Child’s Pose)

Movement·Physical Body + Energetic Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

The geometry of complete surrender — using the body to enact what the mind is being asked to do.

Mechanism

Lowering the forehead to the ground is the body’s most universal gesture of surrender — present in Islam, Yoga, and Zen. The body leads and the whole system follows: holding this position physically communicates surrender to the mind and energy body, and

they respond in kind. The vigilance held in the nervous system releases, the energy system opens, and the life force flows freely.

Protocol

  1. 01

Kneel and sit back on the heels. Fold the torso forward and rest the forehead on the floor. Arms stretched flat in front or resting by the sides. Give the entire weight of the body to the ground and breathe slowly until the body fully yields.
