The Deep Squat

Malasana

Movement·Physical Body + Energetic Body·2–5 minutes

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

The body’s original resting position — a natural release for the lower spine and a direct connection to the ground.

Mechanism

The modern habit of sitting in chairs shortens the hips and pelvis and traps stagnant energy in the lower body. The deep squat decompresses the lower spine, releases the pelvic floor, and grounds the energy of the root — bringing the base of the body into direct contact with the earth and allowing what has been held there to settle and release.

Protocol

  1. 01

Feet slightly wider than the hips, toes angled out. Squat all the way down, heels on the floor if possible. Press the elbows into the inner knees, hands in prayer, spine long. Hold for 2–5 minutes.
