Laser Focus

the mastery of attention

Mind·Intellectual Body + Mental Body·5–10 minutes

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

Training the mind to sustain unwavering attention on a single point. Transforming scattered, leaking energy into a concentrated, powerful force by treating focus as a trainable muscle rather than a fixed talent.

Mechanism

When your attention is scattered across multiple tasks, anxieties, and distractions, the life force bleeds out in every direction — leaving you exhausted and ineffective without clear cause. Deep focus, or Dharana, is the energetic antidote. It is not a genetic gift; it is a capacity that can be built.

Every time your mind wanders and you consciously pull it back to a single target, you are performing a mental rep. Just as the body grows stronger through resistance training, the attention muscle grows through this act of return. Each time you catch the wandering and bring the mind back, you strengthen your capacity for sustained focus.

By sealing the energetic leaks of scattered thinking and multi-tasking, your vital energy pools and concentrates. A scattered mind is like a weak light bulb that barely illuminates a room; a focused mind is a laser beam that can cut through steel.

Protocol

  1. 01

The core anchor: Dedicate 5–10 minutes daily to building the foundation. Sit quietly and select a single anchor — the sensation of the breath in the nostrils, or the steady flame of a candle (Trataka). Focus entirely on this one point and nothing else.

  2. 02

The mental rep: Your mind will wander — it is conditioned to seek stimulation. When you notice you have drifted into thought, do not get frustrated. That moment of noticing is the awakening of consciousness. Gently, without judgment, return your attention to the anchor. Each return is one mental rep, and each rep strengthens the muscle.

  3. 03

Single-tasking — sealing the leaks: Carry this training into daily life. Multi-tasking is an illusion that scatters the life force. Do one thing at a time. If you are reading, just read. If you are eating, just eat. Give the present moment the full weight of your localized consciousness.

  4. 04

The distraction capture system: During deep work, the mind will throw urgent thoughts at you to break your focus. Keep a notebook nearby. When a nagging thought arises, write it down immediately — this externalises the noise, frees your mental space, and allows you to let the thought go and return to your work without losing anything.

  5. 05

Embrace the void — boredom as training: We live in a world built on the Extraction Economy — engineered to fill every empty moment with stimulation, keeping the attention scattered and the life force endlessly dispersed. To build genuine focus, you must learn to sit with a lack of stimulation. Stare out a window.

Stand in a queue without reaching for the phone. Embracing this stillness starves the mind’s false hunger for distraction and builds immense, unwavering concentration. And beyond the training, every gap between activities is an invitation to go further — to practice presence itself, to simply rest as awareness, conscious of consciousness.

These quiet moments are among the most direct doorways into the experience of pure inner silence.

  6. 06

Consistency is far more powerful than duration: five minutes of genuine daily practice will transform your capacity over months. As the attention muscle hardens into a laser, you cease to be a victim of external distractions or unconscious thinking. You become the master of your vital energy — capable of sustaining focus on your vision until it takes form in the physical world.
