falling in love with life
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Devotion, at its deepest, is not a practice directed outward. It is the divine glorifying its own nature through the human form — the source recognising itself within you and worshipping its own glory through you. There is no duality, no external deity separate from the one pure consciousness.
All worship, at its core, is worship of the Self — of that which is already whole, already divine. When you worship a guru or a deity, what you are truly honouring are the divine qualities they embody — qualities that already exist within you.
Worship becomes a form of surrender: by bowing to the divine in them, you let go of resistance to that same divine force within yourself. Even external worship, then, serves to awaken the inner being. It is a mirror for remembrance.
Worship is the act of dissolving into something greater — being absorbed in the sacred, immersed in the beauty and aliveness of your own true nature. This is the spirit in which the practice that follows is approached.
Falling in love with life itself — not as a religious act directed at an external deity, but as a profound, loving recognition that you are an expression of the very life you revere. The path of pure love where the Lover, the Beloved, and the act of loving dissolve into one continuous flow of presence.
Ordinary devotion often keeps the separate self intact by maintaining a gap between “me” and “the Divine.” This practice dissolves that separation entirely — between “me” and life itself.
You begin to recognise the sheer magnificence of the livingness that is the ground of all being, and to treat the ordinary world not as dead matter but as a vibrating expression of pure consciousness. Meeting everything this way — a tree, the sky, another face — turns daily existence into a continuous act of worship.
Not of something separate from you, but of the one universal life that dwells at the core of your own heart. As this recognition deepens, the energetic knot of fear and isolation dissolves. The heart expands.
The compulsive hunger of the separate self — its endless need to extract fulfilment from the world — is replaced by an internal saturation that needs nothing. You no longer take from the world; you overflow into it.
Notice the aliveness: Bring your attention to the simple, undeniable fact that you are alive right now. Look at the ordinary world around you — a tree, the sky, the sensation of your own breathing. Recognise that none of this is ordinary or dead; it is all vibrating with the profound, formless intelligence of Life itself.
Feel the intelligence: Feel into the aliveness that is making your heart beat, making your breath happen, transforming food into flesh. Stop looking for the Divine outside of the present moment. Recognise that the awareness looking out of your eyes is the exact same consciousness animating the entire universe. There is no “other.”
Cultivate reverence: Hold a feeling of deep gratitude and reverence for the life that powers your experience and sustains the body without asking anything in return. Meet whatever arises in the present moment with a welcoming, open love — bowing inwardly to present reality exactly as it is.
Glorify the nature of life: Begin to worship and glorify the qualities of life itself — not as an idea but as a living reality felt right now. It is eternal, never having been born and never dying. It is living, pulsing with aliveness in this very moment. It is totally free — unconditioned, boundless, limitless. It is truth itself — the only thing that is utterly real. It is luminous, pure consciousness shining through every form. Hold each of these qualities in your awareness — not thinking about them but worshipping them, allowing the feeling of reverence to deepen.
As you do, something begins to shift: these qualities begin to feel not like attributes of something external, but like the very nature of what you are.
Offer the self to the All: Surrender your separate sense of self to life itself. Instead of asking life to serve your limited desires, offer your actions, thoughts, and breath back to life. Make your everyday existence a continuous act of glorification — a dissolving of the finite drop back into the infinite Ocean.
Become solely life: From this place of deep worship, allow the recognition to arise: the life you are worshipping is your own essence. What you have been revering is what you actually are. The separate self dissolves as you surrender into this recognition, and you realise yourself as life itself — transcending the limited self entirely.
Do not try to intellectually grasp this. Allow the mind to sink deeply into the spiritual heart and simply revel in the supreme, undying nature of your own being. Through this pure devotion to life itself, the illusion of isolation collapses completely. You no longer fight reality; you fall deeply in love with it.
The compulsive hunger of the mind is replaced by a profound internal saturation. You begin to realise that the Infinite and the finite world are not two different things — they are one seamless, beautiful dance of Divine Play (Lila). Devotion is no longer an action you perform. It becomes your natural state, overflowing with love for the present moment.
