the inner command (Sankalpa)
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Moving beyond petitionary begging — beyond the desperate asking of a separate, frightened self. The recognition that the consciousness looking out of your eyes is the exact same unconditioned intelligence that beats your heart and sustains the cosmos. Therefore, prayer is not an external request. It is an internal command.
The separate self approaches prayer from the Extraction Economy — operating from a state of scarcity and fear, constantly begging: “Please give me money, please heal my sickness, please make them love me.” This posture broadcasts the frequency of lack, and receives more of the same in return. True prayer (Sankalpa) is the precise opposite.
It is the realisation that you are not separate from the intelligence you are praying to. You are it. Prayer, understood this way, is not directed outward — it is a focused movement of consciousness itself, from within. Matter is dense energy; thought is subtle energy.
When you combine a precisely focused intention with a genuine, elevated emotion — the feeling of the prayer having already been answered — the entire inner system reorganises around that coherent field. The body shifts from a state of lack to a state of fullness. From this state, you are no longer pulling against life; you are aligned with it.
You act as a conscious source, not a passive recipient.
The posture of sovereignty: Do not pray from survival mode. If your body is tight, your breath is shallow, and your inner voice is small and frightened — you are praying from a state of lack and it will not reach far. Before you formulate an intention, ground yourself. Take three slow, deep breaths.
Drop the posture of the helpless beggar and stand in the knowing of who you actually are — not the frightened, limited self, but the pure consciousness that is the very source of life, the same intelligence that sustains the cosmos. That is who is praying.
Formulate the intention: Be absolutely precise. Vague, anxious wishes produce vague, anxious results. State your prayer as a clear, present-tense reality — not “I want” or “please give me,” which anchor you in lack and the future, but: “Let this body be flooded with absolute healing,” or “I am aligning with boundless abundance.” The more specific and clear, the more powerful.
The emotional carrier: A thought alone is a dead wire. Emotion is what carries it. Actively generate the physical feeling of the prayer having already been answered. If you are praying for healing, flood your chest with the actual joy and relief of being healthy right now. Claim it as already done. Feel it now, not later.
This emotional saturation shifts the entire biological and energetic field — moving the inner system from scarcity to fullness, from contraction to openness.
Align with the whole: The separate self tends to pray only for its own localised survival — often asking for things that, in the broader picture, would cause harm.
To elevate the prayer, add the spiritual safety valve: “This, or something higher.” You are inviting the unconditioned intelligence of life to fulfil your intention in the way that serves the highest good — not only your narrow, finite perspective.
The release: Once the prayer is cast with full focus and genuine emotion, let it go completely. If you obsess over how and when it will manifest, you reintroduce the friction of the separate self’s control. Drop the prayer into the Void. Surrender your attachment to the outcome. Do not chase what you have prayed for — simply open to it.
Remove all inner resistance and allow it to arrive in its own way and time. Return to effortless presence. Through this understanding of prayer, you stop treating the Divine as a distant authority to appease. You realise that prayer is the highest operational function of your own consciousness.
By fusing clear intention with elevated emotion and sealing it with complete surrender, you cease to be a passive victim of circumstance. You step into your birthright as a conscious architect of your experience, bringing what is unmanifest into material form through the sheer, unapologetic force of the Source that you are.
