Inner Gaze

Shambhavi Mudra

Awareness·Source + Mental Body·5–10 minutes

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

Directing the mental gaze upward and inward — to the space between the eyebrows — creating a single, neutral anchor point that draws the life force upward and inward. A powerful practice for mental clarity and stillness, especially when the mind is chattering and wandering. Don’t fight the thoughts; do this instead.

Mechanism

In ordinary experience, attention moves outward through the eyes and senses. This practice reverses that direction — turning awareness inward to rest on a single, neutral point. By withdrawing attention from the stream of thoughts and anchoring it here, you cut off the energy that was fuelling the mental noise.

Without attention feeding them, the thoughts begin to dissolve into stillness. The sustained inward gaze gradually opens a sense of deep inner silence and clarity.

Protocol

  1. 01

Sit with the spine erect. Close the eyes. Tilt the head slightly upward. Direct your complete attention to the space between the eyebrows — the centre of the forehead, just above the eyebrows. Rest your attention there. You do not need to strain the physical eyes.

Simply turn your inner focus, attention, and awareness toward that point and hold it there lightly. Hold this inner gaze for 5–10 minutes. If the mind wanders, gently guide it back to the centre point. For a deeper effect, combine with AUM chanting — the vibration of the mantra and the inward gaze reinforce each other powerfully.
