The foundational practice of inner observation — and one of the oldest in recorded human history. Simply watching the breath without trying to change it. The entry point that requires no belief, no background, and no special conditions.
The breath is always happening in the present moment. By directing attention to its natural rhythm, you withdraw the mind from its compulsive movement between past and future and anchor it in the only moment that actually exists. You are not controlling the breath — you are simply watching it.
Find a comfortable position, sitting or lying down. Let the body settle and soften. Close the eyes gently. Bring your attention to the physical sensation of the breath — the air moving in through the nostrils, the slight pause, the release of the exhale, another pause. Simply observe this natural rhythm without trying to change it.
You are not breathing — you are watching the breath happen. When the mind wanders — and it will — notice that it has wandered, and return. This noticing and returning is the practice.
To go deeper: become particularly aware of the natural pause at the end of each inhalation and exhalation. Focusing on this still point allows you to deepen your awareness in the present moment.
