the radiant awakening
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Invoking the supreme, unconditioned intelligence of Life to illuminate the mind — dissolving the fog of the conditioned self by flooding inner space with the pure light of consciousness.
The foundational flaw of the human condition is Avidya — mistaken identity. Consciousness forgets what it actually is and contracts into a localised, survival-based state: a dense fog of fear, overthinking, and false selfhood. The Gayatri Mantra is the energetic antidote to this darkness.
It is an acoustic alignment with the solar intelligence — the radiant, life-giving awareness that sustains the entire cosmos, that transforms food into flesh and beats the heart without any effort from you. This mantra does not ask for physical accumulation, which fuels the Extraction Economy. It asks only for illumination.
By vibrating these specific syllables, you dissolve the stagnant debris and mental shadows within the mental body, allowing the boundless intelligence of Life to bypass the conditioned self and directly illuminate your intellect and perception.
The foundation — Om Bhur Bhuvah Svah: Sit quietly and allow the breath to settle. As you chant this opening, bring your awareness to the three dimensions of your existence: the physical body (Bhur), the life-force energy (Bhuvah), and the subtle space of the mind (Svah). Feel that all three are entirely permeated by the same underlying, formless vibration — Om.
Focusing on the source — Tat Savitur Varenyam: Direct your attention to the centre of the forehead or the space of the heart. Meditate on the sheer magnificence of the livingness that grounds all being.
Savitur refers to the supreme radiance — the brilliant, life-giving intelligence that transforms food into flesh and beats your heart without you doing a thing. Hold a feeling of profound reverence for this pure, illuminating power.
The absorption of light — Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi: Let go of all resistance and striving.
As you chant this line, you are declaring: “I meditate upon this divine, purifying light.” Visualise and feel a brilliant, unconditioned light pouring through your central channel. Allow this radiance to burn away the fog of the separate self, dissolving it in the brilliance of pure presence.
The ultimate surrender — Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat: This is the climax of the practice — the surrender of the intellect.
It translates as: “May that light awaken and guide our intellect.” Step out of the way. Drop the effort to figure out your life using the contracted, finite mind. Surrender your whole being to the intelligence of Life itself, allowing it to naturally illuminate your thoughts, actions, and perception. Through the continuous reverberation of the Gayatri Mantra, the localised contraction of the separate self relaxes completely. The inner chaos and chronic insufficiency are flooded with profound clarity. Because your perception has been illuminated, you no longer perceive the physical arena as a threat. The mind becomes a transparent lens through which the Infinite looks back at itself. You are free to navigate the world with a brilliant, awakened intellect, fully engaged in the Divine Play.
