AUM (Om) Chanting

the elemental vibration

Sound·Energetic Body + Emotional Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

Attuning the individual back to the universal through the primordial sound of AUM. The use of pure, unconditioned vibration to harmonise the body, quiet the mind, and purify the energy system.

Mechanism

Every sound in human language requires the manipulation of the tongue. Because the tongue is the instrument of complex language, logic, and conditioned thinking, ordinary words keep us anchored in the psychological mind. But the syllables A (Ah), U (Oo), and M (Mm) are the only three sounds that can be produced without any movement of

the tongue. They are not conditioned by the human system. They are the raw, elemental vibrations of existence itself. On a biological level, this pure physical vibration directly stimulates the vagus nerve, immediately shifting the body out of survival mode. On an energetic level, it acts as an internal acoustic cleanser for the energy body.

The continuous reverberation of AUM shakes loose the stagnant energy and accumulated debris held within the system — dissolving the energetic knots, clearing the channels, and opening the central channel so the life force can flow freely upward.

Protocol

  1. 01

The A (Ah): Sit with the spine erect and take a deep breath in. Open the mouth wide and softly vocalize the sound “Ah.” Do not strain; let the sound pour out naturally. Rest attention just below the navel — feel the vibration shaking loose the dense, stagnant energy of the lower body and rooting you to the earth.

  2. 02

The U (Oo): As the breath continues to empty, let the mouth gently narrow to form the sound “Oo.” Shift attention upward to the chest and the heart. Feel the vibration expanding outward, breaking up the tension and emotional holding stored in the ribcage.

  3. 03

The M (Mm): Finally, close the lips and let the sound turn into a deep, humming “Mm.” Shift attention to the throat, the centre of the head, and the brain. Feel the vibration moving against the skull — cutting through mental noise and soothing the nervous system.

  4. 04

Merge the three: On the next breath, chant them as one continuous, fluid wave: A-A-A- U-U-U-M-M-M. Notice how the sound naturally arises from the belly, rolls through the chest, and dissolves in the head.

  5. 05

Rest in the silence (Turiya): The most important part of AUM is the silence that follows the M. When the sound completely fades, do not immediately take the next breath. Rest your awareness in the empty, lingering vibration. This is the transcendental gap — the pure consciousness out of which all sound and creation arises.

By systematically vibrating the A, U, and M, you tune your physical and energetic vehicle from the root upward. As the stagnant debris is cleared from the central channel, the mind loses its grip on compulsive thinking — flooded by elemental vibration, it grows still.

You step out of the limited boundaries of the conditioned mind and dissolve back into the boundless frequency of Life itself.

  6. 06

Silent chanting: for those in environments where chanting aloud is impractical, AUM can be chanted silently in the mind. More challenging, but when done with genuine intensity and focus, mental chanting can be equally powerful.
