building sleep pressure
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Using the body’s physical energy to build the chemical drive for sleep during the day, while downshifting the nervous system in the evening. The practice of moving in sync with the circadian rhythm.
The human body was built for physical exertion. When daily life is sedentary, pent-up physical energy seeks expression at night — causing restlessness, a wired mind, and an inability to settle. Physical movement also builds adenosine, the neurochemical that accumulates across the waking day and creates the biological pressure for sleep.
The deeper the adenosine build-up, the more powerful the sleep drive by evening. Timing is everything, however. High-intensity exercise spikes cortisol, adrenaline, and core body temperature. Done too late in the day, it dismantles the biological window for sleep
rather than deepening it. By front-loading intensity in the morning and transitioning to gentle movement by evening, physical exhaustion and the biological clock are brought into perfect alignment.
The morning walk: Take a brisk 20-minute walk outside in the morning. This combines cardiovascular movement with natural light exposure — hitting the circadian clock with its two most powerful anchors simultaneously.
Front-load intensity: Perform strength training, cardio, and demanding physical work in the morning or early afternoon. This burns off accumulated stress energy and deepens the adenosine-driven sleep pressure that will culminate naturally by evening.
Avoid the evening spike: Never perform high-intensity exercise within 3 hours of bedtime. It raises core temperature and heart rate directly opposing the body’s wind- down mechanisms.
The evening downshift: Shift entirely to gentle, parasympathetic movement in the evening — yoga, tai chi, light stretching, or a slow walk after dinner. This releases the tension accumulated through the day and creates a clear physical boundary between the activity of the day and the rest of the night.
