the physics of sleep position
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Consciously placing the body in a posture that honours its natural design — supporting the spine, keeping airways open, and allowing the nightly repair work to proceed without physical friction.
While sleep is largely an unconscious process, the initial position of the body determines how efficiently it performs its repair. Gravity and skeletal mechanics dictate how the organs function, how freely you breathe, and how well the spine decompresses. A body positioned against its natural design generates low-level physical stress throughout the night — pulling the nervous system out of deep rest repeatedly, even if the awakenings are too brief to be consciously remembered.
Left-side sleeping — generally optimal: For most people, sleeping on the left side is an excellent default. It uses gravity to keep stomach acid down, supports healthy circulation, and quiets snoring. Place a firm pillow between the knees to align the hips and relieve lower back pressure.
Back sleeping: Distributes weight evenly and is excellent for the spine. If you sleep on your back, place a pillow under the knees to relieve lumbar pressure and slightly elevate the head to keep the airway open. Be aware that back sleeping can worsen snoring and sleep apnoea for those prone to it.
Avoid stomach sleeping: This position forcefully twists the cervical spine and flattens the lumbar curve, creating structural tension that keeps the nervous system in a low- grade stress state throughout the night. If you naturally wake on your stomach, gradually training yourself onto your side will produce noticeable improvements.
Trust the body’s intelligence: Optimising your starting position matters, but the body moves during sleep for good reasons. If you naturally wake in a different position, do not force yourself into discomfort. The goal is zero physical resistance — not rigid adherence to a rule.
