Mechanism

The brain relies on environmental cues to regulate the 24-hour cycle. Melatonin — the chemical signal that initiates sleep — is acutely sensitive to light. Blue light from screens closely resembles midday sunlight to the brain, and exposure to it in the evening suppresses melatonin production and sends a false wakefulness signal to the nervous system.

Meanwhile, the ears never fully switch off — they constantly scan the environment for threats. It is not steady noise that disrupts sleep but sudden acoustic shifts (a door closing, a car passing). By managing both light and sound deliberately, you stop the environment from working against your biology.

    The sensory blackout: For the deepest possible rest, combine a blackout eye mask with quality earplugs. By physically severing the connection to visual and auditory stimulation, you send a powerful signal that the night has truly begun.

    Brainwave entrainment: If the noise is coming from inside — a restless, overactive mind — use specific audio frequencies. Binaural beats in the Theta range (4–8 Hz) support relaxation and the transition into sleep; Delta frequencies (1–4 Hz) support deep sleep. Because the nervous system naturally entrains to external sound, the brain’s electrical activity gradually synchronises with the frequency of the audio.
