Environment·Environment + Mental Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

Auditing the most immediate layer of your physical environment — what wraps your skin all day. The practice of choosing natural, unrestrictive materials that allow the body to breathe and the energy system to function without friction.

Mechanism

Clothing is the environment closest to your skin. The conditioned self typically chooses clothing based on social validation, status, or fashion trends — entirely ignoring the physical and energetic consequences.

Tight, restrictive clothing acts as a physical tourniquet, constricting the flow of blood and lymphatic fluid and creating constant low- level tension in the body. Synthetic fabrics — polyester, nylon, acrylic — are essentially plastic. They do not breathe, and they generate static electricity that interferes with the body’s natural electromagnetic field.

When you wear loose-fitting, natural fibres — organic cotton, linen, silk, wool — you wear materials that were recently alive. They allow the skin to breathe, the body to regulate temperature naturally, and the energy system to exchange freely with the atmosphere.

Protocol

  1. 01

The wardrobe audit: Go through your entire closet. If a piece of clothing requires you to hold your breath, pinches your waist, or restricts your movement, discard it.

  2. 02

The synthetic purge: Check the labels. Systematically replace plastic-based synthetic clothing with 100% natural, earth-based fibres. Your skin is your largest organ — do not wrap it in a synthetic barrier.

  3. 03

Dressing for ease: Choose clothing that creates a continuous physical sense of ease and freedom. When the body is comfortable, the nervous system receives a subtle, ongoing signal of safety.

  4. 04

The nocturnal cocoon: You spend a third of your life in bed. The sheets touching your bare skin during sleep must support the body’s nightly repair. Use high-quality, breathable natural fibres — organic cotton, linen, or bamboo. Synthetic sheets trap heat, prevent the skin from breathing, and disrupt rest during the body’s most vulnerable nightly repair phase.
