the healing power of touch
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
Consciously restoring the body’s need for safe, appropriate physical contact — and recognising that touch is not a luxury but a biological necessity for nervous system health.
The skin is the largest sensory organ in the human body and the primary medium through which we experience safety with other human beings from birth.
Safe, appropriate touch triggers the immediate release of oxytocin — the primary bonding neurochemical — which simultaneously reduces cortisol, lowers blood pressure, and signals the nervous system that we are not alone. Conversely, prolonged absence of meaningful touch — a state known as skin hunger — produces measurable physiological stress.
The modern world, with its digital-primary interactions and increasing physical distance, has created an epidemic of touch starvation that is invisible and rarely named.
Conscious greeting: Where culturally appropriate, initiate genuine physical contact in greetings — a warm handshake, a hand on the shoulder, a heartfelt embrace. Make your physical greetings real rather than reflexive. The quality of your attention transforms a mechanical gesture into an act of genuine warmth.
The healing embrace: When embracing someone, linger for at least twenty seconds with genuine attention. Hold the contact until you can feel both nervous systems relax. This is the threshold at which the body moves from reflexive social contact into genuine physiological bonding.
Self-touch as a signal: When no human contact is available, the body still responds to gentle self-touch. A hand placed on the heart, slow stroking of the arms or face, or holding your own hands — these are not substitutes for genuine connection, but they do activate the same biological pathways and signal safety to the nervous system.
Animal contact: Physical contact with animals produces the same neurochemical cascade as human touch. If you live without human touch, regular time with an animal — a dog, a cat — actively counters the physiological effects of isolation.
