witnessing the crossing
Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya
A more advanced practice that builds on everything in this lever — bringing a thread of gentle awareness to the natural process of falling asleep, without trying to do anything at all.
Most people cross into sleep as passive unconsciousness — the mind simply blanks. But the threshold between waking and sleep is one of the most significant crossings in human experience: the moment the separate self fully releases its grip, the mental narrator powers down, and the prominence of physical and mental activity subsides.
By maintaining a gentle thread of awareness through this crossing, you begin to witness the ego’s dissolution rather than simply collapsing into it. Over time, this opens access to dimensions of consciousness that ordinary sleep — and ordinary waking — cannot reach.
Lie flat in bed in the darkness, having completed your wind-down sequence. Let the body be completely still.
Set a quiet internal intention: “I will remain aware as I fall asleep.” Then let go of all effort to do anything at all. Become the silent witness. Observe the sensations of your body becoming heavy, warm, and still — without trying to change or analyse anything.
Gently bring the events and activities of the day to mind — not to process or analyse them, but simply to see them as fleeting and transitory. Scenes that have already passed. As you see each one this way, consciously let it go. In this releasing, move deeper into the timeless now. Feel the pull of sleep without resisting it. Simply watch.
Remain as consciousness — unidentified with the body, unidentified with the mind. The body is growing heavy; you are not the body. The thoughts are fading; you are not the thoughts. As physical and mental activity subsides, the threshold approaches. Do not grasp at wakefulness; do not force sleep.
Simply remain as the silent, aware presence — and allow the crossing to happen.
This transition offers a profound opportunity: as the prominence of physical and mental activity subsides, a deeper, non-physical dimension of consciousness becomes accessible. Every night, sleep offers the same teaching as the deepest meditation — you are whole and free when the separate self releases its grip.
