Cognitive De-Escalation

quieting the overactive mind

Sleep·Physical Body + Energetic Body

Written by Desmond Olubunmi · Founder of Sunya

Essence

Breaking the cycle of stress and sleeplessness by removing the performance pressure of sleep. The practice of rewiring the mind’s relationship with the bed and giving the nervous system the psychological permission it needs to fully let go.

Mechanism

Sleep requires an absolute sense of safety. When the mind is crowded with unresolved tasks, stress, or the fear of not sleeping, the nervous system remains in a state of alert — cortisol suppresses melatonin, and the brain stays active rather than descending into rest.

Worse, when you repeatedly lie awake in bed frustrated, the brain quietly begins to associate the mattress with anxiety rather than rest — building a conditioned response that makes the problem self-reinforcing. The solution is not to fight the overactive mind but to bypass it entirely.

Protocol

  1. 01

The 20-minute rule: The bed is for sleep only. If you are lying awake and frustrated for more than fifteen to twenty minutes, get up. Go to a dimly lit room and read or stretch until you feel genuinely sleepy. You must break the mental association between your bed and wakefulness.

  2. 02

The midnight protocol: Waking between sleep cycles in the night is a normal biological event. The enemy is the panic that follows, not the awakening itself. If you wake up, never look at the clock — it triggers mental calculation and spikes stress hormones.

Keep the room dark, stay unstimulated, and reframe the goal: your objective is no longer sleep but simply rest.

  3. 03

Paradoxical intention: You cannot force sleep because the act of trying requires wakefulness.

When you cannot sleep, try the opposite: actively intend to stay awake. Tell yourself, “I am just going to lie here in the dark.” By dropping the desperate effort to sleep, you remove the performance anxiety — and in that surrendered space, sleep arrives naturally.

  4. 04

Cognitive shuffling: When the mind is looping on stressful, logical thoughts, disrupt the pattern. Think of a neutral word — “leaf,” for example — and then visualise a series of random, unrelated images starting with that letter: lamp, ladder, lemon. This mimics the fragmented, disconnected imagery the brain produces naturally just before dreaming, gently guiding the mind into sleep.

  5. 05

The pre-bed mind dump: A racing mind at midnight is often a backlog of unresolved tasks. Thirty minutes before bed, write down tomorrow’s to-do list and any lingering concerns. Externalising this data signals to the brain that it no longer needs to hold onto it actively — and it releases.
